No Death Here

leave a comment »

But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, (Luke 24:1-6 NLT)

Imagine, on this most wonderful of days, when we mark Jesus’ victory over death and defeat of sin, that you are one of these women. Imagine that you have just lost your light, your brother, your leader, your friend.

You are looking for a way to hold on to Him. A way to still savor His presence. You are desperate to show Him that you love Him. You head to his tomb to do the only thing you can do to honor him at this point, prepare his body for burial.

When you arrive at the tomb, you are surprised to see that the large stone covering the entrance that terrible Friday and Sabbath is GONE! You are concerned and puzzled when you do not find his body there. Then, suddenly, two men in robes “dazzling,” such as you’ve never encountered appear to you. Terrified, you fall to the ground and bury your face.

These men have not come to frighten. They ask you a very simple question: “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?”

As I read this account, I am reminded of the fact that many of us seek life in all the wrong places every day. We look for the next thing that will help us to feel alive in a dead world. We look for anything to fill the void that comes without Christ.

Today, as we celebrate Christ’s victory over the grave, over OUR grave, let’s seek life where we know we can find it: in HIS presence, walking daily in intimate relationship with Jesus.

Happy Easter!

Days like today?

Well, I just have to write about them. You know. Preserve them.

I wish I could package them and put them on a shelf, and pull them down and live them again when I have days that are less than, “ideal.”

I won’t get into every detail that happened in the course of the day. Let’s just skip to the fun stuff, nnnnK?

Zumba. I will only let my dogs watch me Zumba. ’nuff said.

Anyway, as I was feverishly completing a Zumba workout with my trusty Wii today, my dogs looked at me with faces that said, “Please take us outside for a walk. We would like to stop being subjected to this visual form of, ‘entertainment.’ ”

So, I took them outside, where I glanced over to see my cat with that, “see what I brought you?” look on her face under our trampoline.

Did the gift have feathers? NO! Did the gift have fur? NO!

Did the g g g g gift have scales?    YES!               Ugh!

The cat was happily playing with and attempting to make a meal of said gift. I had to do something.

So, I did what any red-blooded American woman who really wants her cat to eat CAT FOOD would do…. I will let pictures and video explain the rest of the story….

Death This Way Comes

“I am going to keeeeel you. (And eat you!) ”

I had to save him. I mean, he DID have round pupils!!!

Next?

After school, I introduced our new, thankful, friend to my kids. They were happy to meet him.

But, the time came for goodbye!

And…

You Seek Me!!!!!

leave a comment »

As I prepare to experience Advent this year, I have been moved by many of the passages I have read.

One popped up in my reading today that I wanted to share here:

You Seek me, Lord

Through Jesus you sought us
when we were not seeking you,
but you have sought us that we might begin to seek you.
He is the Word through whom you made all things,
and me among them,
your only Son
through whom you called your believing people
to be your sons by adoption,
and me among them;
through him, then, do I make my plea to you,
through him who sits at your right hand to intercede for us,
for in him are hidden all treasures
of wisdom and knowledge.
-Augustine of Hippo, Prayers from the Confessions

May the knowledge that God seeks us continue to fill us with wonder and awe!

The Story

leave a comment »

I saw a commercial today.

The tagline was “The story you could be watching is a lot better than the story you’re in.”

I don’t know about you. But, I love the story I am living. I love it when random people speak to me when it was totally unexpected. I love that human face-to-face contact is still something that people seem to crave.

For some reason, I am not looking forward to the day when we stop speaking to one another in awkward social situations because we are immersed in a mobile television shows or movies.

Just saddens me some. What do you think?

let me rediscover you

We’ll be introducing this song in worship on Sunday, June 12.

This is a song that has really spoken to me strongly lately.

Sometimes, I feel as this song’s lyrics say, that I really don’t know God very well at all.
“How can I say I know You, when all I know is still so small?”

I hope this song resonates with you. Thanks for listening.

Stinkity the Skunk – A New Story from My Daughter

leave a comment »

I had a moment of fun and a heart swelled with pride with I opened my daughter’s take-home folder this morning.

Here is another lovely story that she wrote when given an assignment at school to write anything she wanted. I have typed it, again, just as she wrote it. She is in the third grade.

Once upon a time there was a talking skunk who’s name was Stinkity. Stinkity loved living with her Mom and Dad and her pet frog, Jumpers. Stinkity’s friend was a squirrel and his name was Nutso. Nutso and Stinkity were great friends. “Hey, Stinkity! Throw me the ball!” Nutso yelled. They loved to play baseball. “Stinkity!” Mom yelled, “it’s time for supper!”

Stinkity said goodbye to Nutsoand went inside for supper. Stinkity and her family had maccaroni and cheese, corn and milk. After supper, Stinkity went to bed and her mom sang her a bedtime song, and her dad kissed her on the head and said, “Good-night, Sweetpea,” and went to sleep.

The next morning, Stinkity grabbed her backpack and waited for the bus. When the bus arrived, Stinkty ran into Nutso. She talked with Nutso a little unti they got to school. When they arrived at school, they had a test. Stinkity was nervous. “It was,” “It was a,” It was a mmmmmmmmath tttttttest!”

When Stinkity finished the test she found that she got a 100! Stinkity jumped up and down.

When she got home, she showed her parents and they said it was…WONDERFUL! Stinkity showed it to Jumpers and he just did a ribbit. She guessed it was a complement. When Stinkity showed it to Nutso he said it was AWSOME!

And that’s the story of Stinkity the fantasy Skunk.

THE END

I know this is my daughter, and I am partial. But, I love her writing.  I am excited to see how God is going to use her in His kingdom as she grows in Him.

The Simple Things

leave a comment »

I am writing this lying on a picnic table.

My kids are running free about an empty baseball field within my view.

I love to come to this park on wednesday afternoons. It is quiet but for the sound of a soft cooling breeze, my children’s laughter, and the birds’ songs.

God often works on my spirit here while my soul is still and quiet.

It is in these moments that he has shown me his love, my sin, and his forgiveness.

What are some simple ways that you find communion with God?
